What treatment is available for obesity?

Dietary balance and regular exercise are the cornerstones of obesity treatment. In addition, you have the option of using medicine to aid in weight loss. Surgery to help you lose weight might be an option for you, but only after all other options have been exhausted.

A person who has a large amount of body fat is said to be obese. With a BMI calculator, determining your weight is the simplest method. If your BMI is between 25 and 29.9, you are considered overweight, and if it is 30 or more, you are considered obese.

How does prescription weight loss medication work?

Because each prescription weight-loss drug has a different active ingredient, they all function in somewhat different ways. Wegovy, Mounjaro, Saxenda, and Mysimba all influence the brain and other organs in order to lower desires and hunger, which facilitates cutting back on food intake and weight loss. Xenical and orlistat function by altering the way your body breaks down fat.

You can lose weight with our variety of weight loss therapies, which include injections and tablets. You can use these if you are obese or overweight and have additional conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure that are impacted by weight, but you will need a prescription for them.

Weight-loss injections

Semaglutide is the active ingredient of the weight-loss injectable Wegovy. This functions similarly to glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), another hormone in your body. Normally, your intestines release GLP-1 to signal to your brain that you have consumed a meal. Wegovy functions similarly, alerting your brain when you’re full, allowing you to cut back on food and lose weight.

Another injectable weight-loss medication is called Mounjaro. Tirzepatide, the active component, mimics two hormones involved in the signaling of hunger and satiety. It aids in weight loss by decreasing hunger and extending fullness, much like Wegovy. It must always be taken in conjunction with healthy lifestyle decisions like regular exercise and diet.

Another injectable that can be used to aid with weight loss is called Saxenda. It has an additional component called liraglutide that mimics the GLP-1 hormone. Saxenda signals your brain when you’re full, just like Wegovy and Mounjaro do. This makes it simpler to eat less and lose weight with diet and exercise. Every day, it is injected.

Weight loss tablets

The active component in Orlistat and Xenical is orlistat. When taken with a fat-containing meal, it binds to lipases, which are digestive system enzymes. Orlistat prevents lipase from absorbing fat from food and breaking it down. This implies that a portion of the fat in your meal will be converted to waste and removed from your body.

Mysimba and orlistat function in distinct ways. It acts on the parts of your brain that regulate your energy levels and food intake, not the digestive system. You may feel fuller after eating less as a result of this decrease in your appetite. Mysimba’s two active components work together to regulate your food satisfaction and lessen your desire for certain foods.

Our doctors will periodically check in with you to ensure that any weight loss medication you are taking is having the desired effect. Any medicine used to lose weight needs to be taken in addition to a balanced diet and frequent exercise.

Side effects of weight loss treatment

Like any drug, weight loss treatments might have adverse effects. They are not common and normally go away after a few weeks if they do show up. You can consult with our experts if you have adverse effects from a weight reduction treatment that do not go away or that significantly concern you. To lower the possibility of negative effects, some medications, such Wegovy and Mysimba, are raised gradually over time.

Common Wegovy side effects

The following are Wegovy’s most typical side effects:

  • headaches,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • diarrhea,
  • constipation
  • stomach ache
  • fatigue or weakness

Eventually, the adverse effects normally disappear.

Common Mounjaro side effects

The most common side effects of Mounjaro are:

  • diarrhoea
  • constipation
  • feeling sick (nausea) and vomiting
  • when used in combination with certain diabetes medications: low blood sugar

Digestion-related side effects are typically not very serious. These adverse effects normally go away once the body adjusts to the medicine; they typically emerge when the treatment is started or the dosage is increased.

Common Mysimba side effects

Common Mysimba side effects include:

  • hot flushes
  • anxiety
  • trouble sleeping
  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • restlessness
  • heart palpitations

Usually, these disappear as your body adjusts to the drug. If you have any of the following medical issues, you cannot take Mysimba; however, before prescribing, our doctors will determine your appropriateness.

Common orlistat and Xenical side effects

The most common side effects of orlistat and Xenical are:

  • needing to poo urgently and more frequently
  • oily or fatty poo
  • oily discharge from your rectum (anus)
  • flatulence (farting)

Sticking to a low fat diet will decrease the risk of these side effects.

Can you get weight loss medication over the counter?

A doctor must provide a prescription for any weight loss medication; it cannot be purchased over-the-counter. Only if specific requirements are met may you use weight loss medication. Additionally, if you have certain medical conditions or take other medications, you may not be able to take these treatments. Before you are provided weight reduction medication, a doctor will confirm that it is safe to take.

Exercise

While eating a well-balanced diet might aid in weight loss, frequent exercise is also necessary to burn off energy. Adults should engage in at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise, according to UK government recommendations. This can be divided into five thirty-minute sessions per week. You can raise this gradually, starting with 10 minutes a day, if you find it difficult to exercise. After all, any activity is better than none at all.

According to the NHS, regular exercise can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 40%. Exercise also offers many other health advantages and can lower your risk of various conditions that can impact your weight.

Any activity that causes a rise in heart rate and breathing is considered moderate intensity, and each person’s threshold for this will vary. Typical instances include the following:

  • cycling
  • power walking
  • dancing
  • swimming

If you have less time, you can also exercise vigorously for 75 minutes every week, or you can combine the two. Anything that makes your heart race and your breathing difficult enough that you are unable to carry on a conversation is considered vigorous exercise. This comprises:

  • competitive sports like rugby, gymnastics, and boxing
  • circuit training
  • running

competitive sports like rugby, gymnastics, and boxing; circuit training; running; To support your weight loss efforts, you should also engage in strength and balance exercises twice a week. You can strengthen your arms by lifting groceries or performing strength-training exercises like tai chi or yoga; your neighborhood gym will have all the equipment you need to work on your strength and balance.

We spend a lot of time sitting down, so it’s critical to stand up and move around occasionally You might need to exercise more if you are or have ever been obese. 45 to 60 minutes a day of moderate-intensity exercise is recommended to prevent obesity. It is advised that obese people exercise for 60 to 90 minutes a day to avoid gaining back any weight they have lost.

To incorporate fitness into your daily routine, choose an activity you enjoy or work out with friends, family, or your partner to add a social component.to break up your sedentary (sitting) time. Your local gym’s personal trainer, a weight loss counsellor, or your general practitioner can assist you in creating an activity plan if you require one. Setting modest, attainable goals that you can maintain is preferable. If you have never worked out before, you do not have to start off with 75 minutes a week.

Diet

You should cut back on your daily calorie intake by 600 kcal in order to lose weight at a safe rate of 0.5 to 1 kg annually. If you require assistance with a nutrition plan, your doctor will provide it. This is about establishing long-term, healthier food choices that will enhance your eating habits for the rest of your life, not about following a “fad” diet.

Women who consume no more than 1,400 calories per day can lose weight. Men ought to consume no more than 1,900 calories each day. You should replace high energy and harmful foods with healthier options if you want to reduce weight. This entails consuming fewer processed foods, fast food, and sugary beverages like alcohol and soda.

A healthy and balanced diet should include:

  • some dairy foods and milk
  • some sources of protein such as meat, eggs, fish, and beans
  • lots of vegetables and fruits
  • some rice, pasta, bread, potatoes, and other starchy foods (ideally, these will be wholegrain)
  • only small amounts of foods or drinks that contain a lot of sugar or fat

Foods high in salt should be avoided if you are obese or overweight. Your blood pressure may rise as a result, perhaps leading to hypertension.

To determine how many calories you consume each day, read the labels on the food and beverages you buy. The greatest strategy to reduce the number of unneeded calories in drinks is to drink lots of water.

Diets that are referred to as “fads” should be avoided because they are rarely effective, unhealthy, or realistic. They can induce illness, and eliminating a whole food group or fasting for an extended length of time is not a sustainable lifestyle. If you choose to adhere to a diet plan, be sure that:

  • is not overly restrictive on what foods you can have
  • educates you about healthy eating and portion sizes
  • is based on losing weight safely and gradually, to achieve long term weight loss goals that are likely to last

Consult your physician if you plan to follow a very low calorie diet, which is ingesting less than 800 calories per day. This is only appropriate for a select few, and even then, you shouldn’t do it for more than 12 weeks at a time.

Surgery

Obesity can occasionally be treated with weight loss surgery. It is only accessible via the NHS in the following circumstances:

  • are fit enough to have surgery
  • have a BMI over 40, or between 35 and 40 and certain health conditions that weight loss could improve, such as type 2 diabetes
  • are committed to the long term follow up of your surgery
  • you have tried all other weight loss strategies but they have not achieved or maintained weight loss
  • you are receiving intensive management of your weight, usually through your GP

In exceptional circumstances, if your BMI is higher than 50, surgery might be advised right soon.
